1964 Topps #27 Mets Team Card

I feel like I say this all the time, but some of my favorite cards to collect, along with managers cards, are team cards. I’m not 100% clear on why it is that I love them so much, but I do. Maybe it’s the camaraderie. Maybe it’s the school portrait-ness of it all. I don’t know. But just look at it. All the guys, getting together on Picture Day. With the school principal and those guys in white. Trainers? Ground keepers? Concession stand workers? Who knows.

I’ve heard tell of some folks not liking these older team cards, where the team is cut out on a solid color background. Not this guy. It’s so pop-arty I think it gave me a cavity.

I always love seeing the team stats as well, especially when it’s for a team as bad as the ’64 Mets. I think it makes me feel better about this years team. We may have been bad, but at least out batting leader did better than .272. Of course that good feeling goes away pretty quickly when you realize that out home run leader did not hit as many as Jim Hickman did in 1964. But at least we didn’t have any 20 game losers. At least I don’t think we did. I sort of stopped paying attention at some point.

  1. I think that’s the first team card I’ve seen where the guys in the back row kind of slope downward.
