And So It Begins…

So the regular season is a thing of the past. Now that MLB has separated the wheat from the chaff, let the post season begin.

Actually before the post season proper can get underway, we have the little issue of the second Wild Card to contend with. That is what is going down today. The 2 Wild Card teams from each league will face off in a 1 game, sudden death playoff match to decide who is worthy to play the real championship contenders.

This basically means that it’s that time of the year again for me to do some bandwagon jumping and pick who I’m going to root for in the post season since my Mets once again failed to make the cut.

Over in the National League, we have the Braves, who won the traditional Wild Card, facing off against the Cardinals, who squeaked their way into post season contention once again by winning the second, booby-prize Wild Card. Of course if the past is any indication, that means they’re on their way to a World Series victory. As much as this pains me to say this as a Mets fan, I think I’m going with the Bravos in this match up. Yeah, I’m supposed to hate the Braves and all that, but at this point in my life, my dislike for the Cardinals trumps my hatred for Atlanta. Also, and this is another thing that I can’t believe I’m saying out loud, it would be a kind of cool way for Chipper to cap off his career. Of course, much of this Braves love that I’m feeling right now has more to do with the fact that they’re playing the Cardinals, so if Atlanta does move on to the NLDS, chances are I’ll go right back to rooting against them. By the way, who would’ve thought that anyone would post cards featuring Johnny Lewis twice in 3 days?

Meanwhile, over in the American League…

This one is not a very hard decision for me. Actually, I take that back. It was a little hard. For the past few years, I’ve been a casual supporter of the Rangers come playoff time. Texas fans can go ahead and blame me for jinxing them, but rest assured, I will not be lending my support to them in this 1 game playoff. I have to go with Baltimore on this one. I always love it when a team seemingly comes out of nowhere and makes it to the playoffs, and baltimore certainly fits that bill. Actually, it seems like the post season is chock full of stories like that, so it should be pretty fun. I had actually been pulling for the O’s all season just to see the Yankees lose to a $76M team. They made a good run at it, but unfortunately fell just short.

So there you have it. In this preliminary round of the playoff, a Mets fan is rooting for the Braves and the Orioles. Maybe 2012 really is the end of the world.
