A New King in Town (Almost)

Just on the odd chance that anyone out there missed the Mets game last night (because after all, who in there right mind would not be glued to the television every single time the Mets are on?), after showing a couple of small signs of resiliency and life, the team ultimately fell to the Pirates by the score of 10-6. Not such good news.
What did happen during the course of the game that was pretty good news is that this guy went 2 for 4.
Why is that such good news you ask? Well, it turns out that the RBI single that he hit in the bottom of the 7th inning happened to have been the 1,418 hit of David’s big league career. Why does that matter you ask?
Well it turns out that only one other player in the history of the New York Mets franchise has every gotten 1,418 hits, and that happens to be this guy.
David Wright’s next hit will officially make him the All-Time Mets Hit King. That will go along with him being the franchise leader in runs scored, total bases, doubles, RBI’s, walks and extra base hits.
So congrats to you, David. Hopefully, that next hit will come sooner than later. Also hopefully the organization will get it’s stuff together and resign you during the off season so that you can pad the hell out of that record.
Also, as a side note, I really think that it’s pretty awesome that out of all the guys who’ve played for the Mets over the years, it was Ed Kranepool who held that record for so long. He was never a star player, and never had more than 133 hits in a season. He just grinded it out, year after year and basically outlasted everyone else. I think there’s something very cool about that. And I think that’s why, even though David is going to end up with this record (and if they do resign him, pretty much any other longevity based record that Ed still holds) he’ll always have a special place in the hearts of Mets fans. Of course I also think it’s pretty cool that what took him 18 years to accomplish, David did in half that time.
(By the way, if you’re counting, this is 4 days in a row that I’ve managed to put up a post. Yay me!)
