Mets Through the Years: The All-Star(s), 1979
July 10th, 2012 by slangon

Despite being a pretty terrible team at this point in their history, the Mets were actually able to send 2, count ’em 2 players to the 1979 ASG.

Young Lee Mazzilli made the only All-Star appearance of his career, but he made the most of the opportunity. He entered the game in the 5th inning with the N.L. All-Stars down 6-5. He led off the inning with a homer off of Jim Kern to tie the game. Then in the top of the 9th, this time facing Ron Guidry, he drew a bases loaded walk to force in the go ahead run. Bruce Sutter would come in to save the game and give the N.L. squad another win.

John Stearns watched Lee Mazzilli do all that from the bench.
