Mets Through the Years: The All-Star(s), 1974
July 9th, 2012 by slangon

The Mets 1974 contribution to the All-Star squad was a crew that you might not have expected.

Yogi Berra mad his first and only appearance at the All-Star game as a manager, thanks to leading the team to the World Series the year before. That goes with his 15 appearances as a player.

Jerry Grote made his second and final All-Star appearance in 1974. He replaced Johnny Bench as the catcher in the top of the 9th and caught the final 3 outs of the N.L.’s 7-2 victory.

Jon Matlack made his first appearance as an All-Star. Despite his 7-6 record at the break, his ERA was 2.70 and he was already up to 100 punch outs. He pitched the top of the 6th, giving up a single to George Hendrick, getting Joe Rudi and Brooks Robinson to fly out, walking Thurmon Munson and getting Frank Robinson to groundout to second.
