R.I.P. Matty Alou
November 3rd, 2011 by slangon
Former Major Leaguer and part of a long baseball family dynasty Matty Alou has passed away in his native Dominican Republic. The 1966 National League Batting Champ died of complications brought on by diabetes.
Mateo spent 15 seasons in the Majors, playing for the Giants, Pirates, Cardinals, A’s, Yankees and Padres. For much of his career his brothers Felipe and Jesus were also Major Leaguers. The 1963 season saw all three brothers playing for the San Francisco Giants. On September 15 of that year, the Giants had an all-Alou outfield. Felipe had started the game in right, but moved to left when Jesus came in the game in the 7th to replace Willie McCovey. Then, an inning later Matty came in to play left and Felipe moved to center to replace Willie Mays.
Rest in peace, Senor Alou.
