Some Ginter Trades
August 4th, 2009 by slangon

(Note: I was going to wait to scan some of these cards before I posted this, but f-that. You all know what they look like.)

I’m not sure how everyone else out there sets up their thru-the-mail trades, but I’ve been doing it through a site called Sports Card Fun. I’ve had some pretty good success with it. Basically, the way it works is you sign up for an account and set up your trade page that lists your wants and cards you have for trade. Then you can browse their message boards for any cards other people are looking for, or post your own message. Pretty straight forward. They even have an eBay-esque point system so you can identify people on the site who are pretty trustworthy. I’ve been using it for about a year now, and I’ve never had a problem.

A few weeks ago I had arranged for a couple of trades for some Ginters, both of which ended up in my mailbox on Saturday.

The first trade comes to us from feelgoodchicken in Gresham OR*. I actually didn’t even have to give up any A&G’s. He was looking for some 09 Topps base cards that I was able to supply him with. So without further ado, heres what feelgoodchicken sent me:

23 – Kristen Armstrong (Olympic lady)

24 – Steve Wiebe (Donkey Kong dude)

26 – Charles Goodyear (rubber dude)

109 – Samuel Morse (Inventor of telgraphs and codes, as well as painter of historic scenes dude)

158 – Sigmund Freud (Crazy people dude)

165 – Chase Utley

270 – Josh Outman

278 – Herb Simpson

I’m just realizing that out of those 8 cards, only 3 are baseball players, and 1 of them hasn’t played since 1963. I’ve read of other people complaining about the Allen & Ginter set having so many non-baseball subjects, which I personally don’t understand. I actually really like that Topps includes a bunch of athletes from other sports and historical figures. I even like the buildings and galaxies and what-not. I suppose I can see their point. If they’re buying a pack of baseball cards, they expect to get baseball cards. Not a card of The Electron, or Pluto. Me, I like ’em.

Aside from the non-baseball subjects, I’m especially into this years inclusion of the Negro League players. It’s always cool to give some recognition to guys who paved the way for others and then sort of got brushed under the rug and forgotten. No offense to guys like Cool Papa Bell and Josh Gibson, but I’m also glad that the Negro League players they included are guys that I’ve never heard of.

Trade number two is from someone who goes by the username Bupps out of Hoffman Estates, IL*. Bupps recieved an envelope full of 09 Ginters from me, and in return sent me these:

7 – John Smoltz

9 – Ryan Theriot

14 – Troy Tulowitzki

40 – Jeremy Hermida

47 – J.J. Hardy

76 – Brandon Phillips

84 – Justin Upton

87 – Aaron Cook

121 – Ryan Church

132 – Anna Tunnicliffe (Sailor lady)

210 – Johan Santana

237 – Walton Glenn Eller (Shootin’ dude)

This one was much more straight forward. Nothing special, just a bunch of cards I happened to need. Although, with the addition of Mr. Church and Mr. Santana, I think my 09 Ginter Mets team set is down to just the Sheffield SP.

*You know how some people might keep a map where they stick little pins in the places they’ve visited? For some reason I thought it might be interesting to keep a map like that of places I’ve recieved cards from. Or is that just silly?
