R.I.P. to The Octopus

Former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop and 1944 N.L. Most Valuable Player Marty “The Octopus” Marion passed away last Tuesday, March 15. Marion played for the Cardinals from 1940-50, managed the Cardinals in ’51 and was a player-manager for the St. Louis Browns in ’52 and ’53. He also managed the White Sox from 1954-56. Aside from his M.V.P. award, Marty was also selected to 8 consecutive All-Star teams from 1943 to 1950 despite his .263 career average.

He died of natural causes at age 93.
