2010 Topps Series 2 Hobby Box, Part 7
June 2nd, 2010 by slangon

Round 6, here we come.

Pack 21 (Ruth):

393 Jason Frasor
522 Jordan Schafer
651 Mike Aviles
559 Nick Markakis
CMT91 Ryne Sanberg
LL-37 Jackie Robinson / Ichiro

346 Taylor Teagarden
420 Shin-Soo Choo
448 Joakim Soria
Felix Hernandez Attax

That’s a pretty awesome action shot up on that Markakis card. Nice choice. I think I’ve decided that I don’t really dig those Cards That Your Mom Threw in the Trash When You Weren’t Looking. I’m not really into reprints in general and most of those just make me want to go out and get the original. I’ve said before that the Legendary Lineage cards were some of my favorite inserts in this years set. One thing I do find annoying is how many times they used the same guys on multiple cards. In Series 1, Jackie was paired up with Matt Kemp and Ichiro was paired up with George Sisler. Why did they need to be paired up with each other in Series 2? That’s some lazy pairing, Topps.

Pack 22 (Pedroia):

582 Martin Prado
368 Wade LeBlanc
427 Brandon Webb
496 Rajai Davis
598 Alberto Callaspo
VLC17 Mike Schmidt
T16 David Wright

529 Carlos Lee
614 Kelly Johnson
Tim Lincecum Attax

Well, I did get a Met, even if it is an insert card that I’m not too fond of. That 1960 style Schmidty looks pretty slick, however.

Pack 23 (Cobb):

430 Kazuo Matsui
370 Robinson Cano
597 J.R. Towles
372 Philadelphia Phillies FH
CMT103 Manny Ramirez
TR69 Brooks Robinson

587 David Murphy
618 Jorge Cantu
593 Derek Holland
Ryan Zimmerman Attax

And the Turkey Red streak continues. Cobb is 5 for 6 with spitting out Turkey Reds so far. The number of Turkey Reds I’ve gotten from packs that do not have a Gothic D on the front? Zero.

Pack 24 (Mantle):

556 Chicago White Sox TC
366 Hiroki Kuroda
335 Jordan Norberto RC
498 Sergio Santos RC
379 Phil Hughes
437 Luke Hochevar Gold Border 0859/2010
PP-63 Clay Buchholz

608 Pittsburgh Pirates TC
594 Andy LaRoche
Zack Greinke Attax

Another mediocre pack from Mr. Mantle. We’ve only got 3 rounds to go. You better step it up, Mick.

The Verdict:

Overall, this was a pretty lackadaisical round for all 4 of our contestants. I think Pedroia takes it on the strength of that that Mike Schmidt and the crappy D. Wright insert. The Peach is runner up thanks to his impressive run of Turkey Reds, followed by The Babe and The Mick.

For those following along at home, 2/3 of the way through the box, the score stands at:

Cobb – 20
Ruth – 17
Pedroia – 15
Mantle – 8
