The Most Fun I’ve Had With eBay in a While, Part II
May 26th, 2010 by slangon

This here is the second lot of vintage cards that I won my last go ’round on eBay. This equivalent of a pack of 1969 Topps cards ran me a staggering $1.51. Let’s see how we did.

I was actually pretty excited about that Tommie Aaron card. He is, of course the younger brother of Bad Henry. I’m always a little skeptical when I see a franchise sign a sibling of a superstar player, especially when I look that sibling up on Baseball-Reference and see their stats. Although I gotta say, Tommie actually tore it up in AAA. In ’67, he was actually the MVP of the International League when he was playing for the Richmond Braves. The has team actually named its own MVP award the Tommie Aaron Memorial Award since Tommie sadly passed away from leukemia in 1984. Interestingly, Tommie and Hank hold the Major League record for most home runs hit by 2 brothers with 768.

Also, not that I ever disliked this set, but I always thought the ’69 set was a little plain, and not in a cool way, like the ’67 set. I have to admit though, seeing just these 6 cards all lined up like this looks pretty nice with those little bubbles of color popping all over the place.

Here is some of the better cards from this lot.

Don’t ask me why, but among the other weird obsessions that I have with baseball cards, I am obsessed with cards of teams that no longer exist. Whether it’s a team like the Browns or Senators or Expos, who all went on to become completely different teams, or a team like the Braves or Dodgers or Giants that moved but still kept their name. For some reason the Seattle Pilots especially fascinated me. Maybe because they existed as the Pilots for such a very short period of time. Either way, I’ve wanted a Seattle Pilot card, any Seattle Pilot card, for as long as I can remember. Now I’ve got one. I would still love to get Sweet Lou’s rookie card though. As far as I can tell, that’s as close as you’re going to get to a star player in a Pilot’s uniform.

This card is just awesome. I love these ’69 All-Stars. If you ask me, they look so much cooler than the base cards from this years set. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something really weird going on with that black and white photo in the background. It’s almost like the crowd looks like a photo but Brooks looks like a badly drawn sketch. I took a quick look on COMC at other All-Stars from this set and some seem to have the same weirdness while others don’t.

As cool as a bunch of the other cards from this lot are, I think this one is definitely my favorite. I loved his work on the Aadams Family. Also, I was, like most 8 year olds, obsessed with a big leaguer named Gaylord.

That’s it for the 1969 episode of Fun With eBay. Stay tuned for the finale.
