Some 1964 Topps High Numbers
May 9th, 2010 by slangon
In honor of the fact that today the Mets are playing like some of those early Mets teams, I present to you a quintet of 1964 Topps High #’s that I recently won off of eBay.
It’s always nice to be able to cross off any high number from any of these older Topps sets from the era when being a high number meant something. Therefore it’s 5 times as nice to be able to cross off 5 of them. Although, the ’64 set is by no means my favorite design from the 60’s, it is pretty nice looking. I especially like those Rookie Stars cards. The Kranepool is probably my favorite of the bunch though, just because it’s Kranepool. Also, that jersey that he’s wearing is awesome. I don’t know exactly what it is about old timey road greys that I love, but I do love them.
Here we have the backs, in all their nauseating pinkish / orange glory. An interesting pattern emerges with the Mets cards in the high numbered series of 1964. There’s a Met at card #’s 536, 546, 556, 566 and 576. I don’t know that that means anything. I’m just pointing it out. There’s also something interesting about those scratch-off squares. As you can see the Joe Christopher card isn’t scratched off, but if you hold it at an angle, you can see the answer. They’re not really scratch-off in the sense that there’s a layer of something that gets removed to reveal the answer. I guess however the answer is printed on the card somehow reacts with the coin to make it visible. Weird.
The 2004 Topps set was a nice throwback to the 1964 set design.
