2010 SlangKo Award Winners Bob Friend

Here’s another nice through the mail autograph I got back recently. This one is of Bob Friend. Aside from having a pretty interesting last name, Mr. Friend spent 16 seasons in the Majors, 15 of which were played with the Pirates. His final year was split between, oddly enough, the Mets and the Yankees. By the time he came to New York, he was a shadow of his former self, going 6-12 with a 4.55 ERA. He did throw a complete game shutout for the Mets though.

Clearly, his career year came in 1958, when he put up a 22-14 record and threw 16 complete games. He was voted to the National League All-Star Team, came in 3rd in Cy Young voting and 6th in MVP voting. Just to give you an idea of how good he was that year, the five guys who came in ahead of him in MVP votes: Warren Spahn, Frank Thomas, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Ernie Banks. That’s some pretty nice company.
