Card of the Moment #14

2005 Upper Deck Origins Materials #PI Mike Piazza Jersey Relic

I had picked this up a while back from an eBay seller that had a whole gaggle of relic cards for $0.99. Of course since they’re auctions and not just straight up sales, that doesn’t mean you’re going to pay just $0.99. In the case of this Piazza jersey, I did though. I’ve always like the design of these Origins cards, which reminds me a bunch of the 1948 Swell Sport Thrills set. I’m torn on whether to say it was outright based on it or not, since it is quite a bit different. (Correction: Of course I should have been torn on saying that, since it’s not at all based on the ’48 Swell Sport Thrills. It’s clearly based on the 1940 Play Ball set.) Either way, I think it’s a cool design and I enjoy looking at it. I further enjoy looking at it since it features one of the greatest players to ever wear a Mets jersey.

One strange thing I notice about this card is that on the reverse side, there’s an indentation from where the jersey swatch is.

This is where the beauty of Check Out My Cards comes in. Since they scan and show all the backs of the cards, I checked out all the Origins Materials cards they had and none of them had this outdent, so I don’t think it’s supposed to be there. I also have other Upper Deck relic cards that have this curious bump, including two different Origins Old Judge jersey cards that I got from completely different sources. I don’t recall ever seeing this on a Topps relic card. Weird, no?

  1. I have indents on several of my UD relic cards, though I don’t have any from that particular set if I recall.
