Some Recent eBay-ocity

I picked up some pretty nice cards on eBay over the last week or two. What with the Blizzard of ’09 and general holiday nuttiness, I haven’t had a chance to post them until now.

First up, we have a 2008 Goudey John Maine Jersey.

Ahh, the good old days, last year, when I still liked Goudey. Am I alone in my feeling that I would’ve had so much more love for Upper Deck if they had decided to quietly put the Goudey line to sleep this year, and instead use that money to buy nicer card stock for the Goodwin Champions set? Who’s with me? The 2008 Goudey set on the other hand I thought looked cool. I’m really hoping for a nice turn around for Johnny Maine this coming season, too. When he’s on, he’s awesome. Plus he’s still young. I also like how even when he pitches well, he’ll still find something he thought he could improve on. I think the Mets need more dudes with that attitude.

Next up, a 2008 Upper Deck A Piece of History Box Score Memories Jersey

Frenchy has quickly become one of my new favorite Mets. Of course, I might retract that statement if he doesn’t live up to the hype of his first half season in Queens. It’s amazing how fickle fans are, isn’t it? As you can see, this card is from Jeff’s days in Atlanta, which I don’t necessarily mind. As a Mets collector, I’m pretty much limited to white, grey or black jersey swatches, so getting a blood red swatch is pretty cool. The card itself is interesting. I hadn’t seen one of these before this. The idea of having a relic card that celebrates a particularly good game is a cool one, I think. It seems to me that if you’re going to do that, it would make sense to actually have the jersey swatch be from that game. I understand that that’s probably a logistic nightmare for a card company, but to just have a random jersey swatch on a card that is talking about a specific game seems a little half-baked to me. By the way, that turd on the jersey is just tape schmutz that was on the outside of the top loader, not a dirt stain.

And finally, probably my favorite of the bunch, a 2009 T206 Framed Fernando Martinez Autograph.

The frames on the framed cards from this set are just out of control awesome looking. Topps really has the whole framed relic/auto/printing plate/whatever thing down. Now if F-Mart can get his act together this card might quickly become one of my favorites out of my whole collection.

  1. ’08 Goudey did a great job with All Things Maine…relic, auto, mini, etc.

We too really like the T206 min/frame dealie. When they get it right, they really get it right.
