1988 Topps Football #396 Checklist 265-396

The Card of the Moment is a checklist?!? WHAAAA?!?! Let me ‘splain.

Right around this time last year, sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I was visiting my parents and decided to take a look around the basement and my old room to see if there were any cards that I had left there. I ended up stumbling across a shoe box with a veritable mish-mash of cards in it. The contents were 90% football cards, but there was a smattering of basketball, boxing and even military cards. Now I knew that when I was a kid I only collected baseball cards, so I figured this box must belong to brother. When I asked him about it, he told me I could keep them. Nice. That box has sat untouched in my office since then.

The other day, I decided to take a gander at what was in it, and this checklist was sitting on top of pile staring back at me, and the first thing that my eye landed on was the name of Ed “TooTall” Jones. I used to love “Too Tall” Jones when I was little and I had totally forgotten that fact until I saw his name on the checklist. I actually don’t think I ever saw him play or even knew what team he was on. I loved him purely for his name.

After my attention was grabbed by “Too Tall”, I read further and realized that this checklist also had the Giants and the Jets on it. (Apparently, back then Topps arranged their football checklists by team.) What’s more, this was the Giants team of my youth. Phil Simms, L.T., Harry Carson, Sean Landetta, Pepper Johnson, Mark Bavaro.

Then, all the way at the bottom, was The Man, Bo Jackson, whom I also loved as a kid, but more for his exploits on the diamond than on the gridiron.

So this card may be junk wax. It may be a lowly checklist. But for a brief moment, it reminded me of a part of my childhood that I had just about forgotten. For that, it is The Card of the Moment #11.
