Card of the Moment #9
November 19th, 2009 by slangon

A really, really, really long time ago, I had bought this weird re-pack thing from Target, which I kept meaning to write up a little thing about. I even got as far as starting to scan and upload some cards. I’m sure everyone who has tried their hand at keeping up a blog knows the story. One thing lead to another, it kept getting pushed back, eventually the cards got mixed in with other cards, yaddah yaddah yaddah. Long story short, that idea for a post is dead and buried. This card was scanned in. I stumbled across it. Now it’s the Card of the Moment.

2007 Goudey #222 Tony Gwynn

This pack was actually the reason I had bought the re-pack in the first place. If I remember correctly, the deal was 15 packs for $9.99. There was 4 packs that you could see. The 2007 Goudey was one of them. I actually already have the base set complete for this bad boy*, but there’s still a bunch of SP’s that I needed, and I was hoping to get lucky with that pack of Goudey staring back at me. What were the odds that that would actually happen? I guess pretty good, because it did happen.

As I’ve explained in the past, I used to be a huge fan of the Upper Deck Goudey line. The 09 version has soured me on the set to the point that I really hope they take that horse out back and put ‘er down. The 07 version, however, is a different story. They’re defiantly the best of the 3 Goudey retro sets. I love the art work. I love the little red bar at the bottom. I love that all the cards are minis. I love the weird random backgrounds. I do find it weird that, even though this was the first of the Goudey retro sets, it’s a total throw back to the 1934-36 Diamond Stars set. Not that that’s bad. I actually really love that set. I’m working on a second set of custom cards based off it, as a matter of fact. I just think it’s weird that even though Upper Deck ripped off the Diamond Stars set, they decided to call it Goudey.

Moving past the design and artfulness of this card, it also garners Card of the Moment status due to the subject depicted. I’ve always been a Mets fan first and foremost, but even in my youth there were always those dudes that would make you get excited when the Mets were scheduled to play a certain team. I remember the Braves being one of those teams, oddly enough, because I really liked Dale Murphy. The Expos because of Andre Dawson and Gary Carter, before he came to the Mets. St. Louis had Ozzie Smith. The list goes on. My point is that I always got excited when the Mets were supposed to play the Padres because I loved watching Tony Gwynn play. The dude only struck out 434 times in 9,288 at-bats. I think David Wright struck out that many times just this season. I also really love when guys play their entire career for one team.

It’s also pretty awesome that he’s duded up in that old-school Padres uniform. The only thing that could possibly make it any better is if they put the swinging friar somewhere.

* I guess that’s not technically true since I really just have a Frankenstein set that’s a mish-mosh of red and green backs. I consider that a complete set. I’m sure a lot of other folks don’t.

  1. How did I miss this post??? That card is BEEEEEUTIFUL!!!

  2. Yeah. I always sort of forget what a good looking set this is, especially since the 2009 version is so crappy looking.
