Thomas Alva Edison (b. February 11, 1847, d. October 18, 1931), Inventor: Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park", he was a prolific inventor, holding 1,093 U.S. patents in his name. Was defeated in the War of Currents in the late 1880's, although his direct current electrical system is still in use today.
