Ella Jane Fitzgerald (b. April 25, 1917, d. June 15, 1996), Jazz Singer: Rose to fame after winning an amateur night at the Apollo. Was noted for her pure tone, impeccable diction, and improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. Won 13 Grammys and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
