Edgar Allan Poe (b. January 19,1809, d. October 7, 1849), Writer: One of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, and generally considered the inventor of the detective story. Was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore in clothing that was not his own. Died four days later, calling out the name "Reynolds".
