Another Double Dose of TTM Success
October 23rd, 2009 by slangon

Geez. First I get two back last Friday, now I get two back on Monday. How lucky can one guy get. I think these might be some of my favorites so far.

2009 SlangKo Custom Jimmy Piersall

09SLANGKOpiersall

I’ve been pretty fascinated by Piersall ever since I heard about that Fear Strikes Out movie. Sometimes I feel a bit guilty being fascinated by the antics of someone diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but I can’t help but be fascinated by a Boston Red Sox player who gets into a fist-fight with Billy Martin and then proceeds to get into a fist-fight with one of his own teammates. Other, less violent antics include shooting home plate with a water pistol, heckling the umpire from the grand stand roof, coming to bat in a Beatles wig and playing air guitar on his bat.

I really became fascinated with him when I found out that he played briefly for the Mets in 1963. It was during his stint as a Metropolitan that he belted his 100th Home Run, and celebrated it by running the bases backwards. In order, mind you, but running backwards. I was lucky enough to track down a photo of that which I used for the custom card I sent Mr. Piersall. I happened to mention in the letter I sent him that I was really interested in that particular story, and I don’t know if it was coincidence or not, but the card was put back in the top loader upside down.

2009 SlangKo Custom Duke Snider

09SLANGKOsniderWhat can I possibly say about this except utter awesomeness. The signature looks a bit shakier than any images of his signature I see on the web, but who cares. I mean it’s Duke Snider. One interesting side note on this one. Look closely at the bottom right corner. Under where the card tilts up. Can’t see anything? Here. Let me help.

SniderDNACould that possibly be a Duke Snider DNA Relic? Who the hell knows? I just know that is too long to be my hair, too short to be my wife’s hair, and too thick to be the baby’s hair. Of course it could be anybody’s hair, but it’s kind of fun (and a little creepy) to pretend it’s a Duke Snider DNA relic.

Well, there you have it. I’m not doing too shabby on these TTM requests. I’ve sent 9 out before Monday, and so far have gotten 6 back signed and only 1 returned unsigned. I don’t know what other people’s experiences with Through The Mail Requests are, but I’d say that’s pretty good. Especially when you consider that 3 of those 6 are Hall of Famers and 1 of them hit one of the most famous home runs in the history of the game.

  1. Wow, that’s awesome! The Snider is gorgeous, man.

  2. […] making some really nice custom cards and getting them signed through the mail. My favorite is the Jimmy Piersall card, but the dual Joe Pignatano/Eddie Yost one is pretty sharp, […]
