Happy Veterans Day
November 12th, 2012 by slangon

We here at Condition: Poor would like to extend a hearty thanks to all of those past and present who’ve served our country. We salute you, sirs and ladies.

I thought this would be an appropriate time to show some kind of cool cards that randomly found their way into my collection from a set of cards issued in 1991 by a company called Lime Rock called Heroes of the Persian Gulf.

There were a few companies that issued card sets depicting the military actions unfolding in the Persian Gulf during that time, including some bigger names like Topps and Pacific. Unlike most of those sets, the Lime Rock cards focused on the military hardware being used.

Having grown up in the height of G.I. Joe mania, I’ve always been interested in military vehicles and weapons, so I find these cards to be pretty damn neat.

I also quite like the design. It’s patriotic yet simple. It’s also sort of interesting how dated the photos look. I mean, I realize that 1991 was over 20 years ago, but seeing as I clearly remember all of this happening, it doesn’t seem that long ago to me. But when I look at some of these images, they just seem much much older. For instance, if you took the M102 image above out of the context of the card and just showed me the image and then asked me what war it was from, I’d be sorely tempted to say Vietnam.

Overall, not that I would set about to collect these cards, I’m pretty glad that I have these few in my collection.

Again, a big thanks to all of those who’ve served and Happy Veterans Day!
