Mets Through the Years: The All-Star(s), 2008
July 12th, 2012 by slangon

2008 was really the beginning of the end for the Mets. There was still high expectations coming into the season and the team didn’t perform terribly, but this was really when all the circus aspects surrounding the them began to creep in. They still sent 2 players to the ASG.

Wright was making his third consecutive All-Star team. He did not get the start this year, but he did get in the game. He pinch hit for Albert Pujols of all people. I bet not too many guys can say they were brought in to hit for Prince Albert. Since Pujols was the DH, that’s the position Wright took over. He got 3 at-bats with a walk. He struck out twice and got a single in the 13th.

Wags again made the All-Star team and again saw some action. Again, he screwed the pooch. He came into the game in the bottom of the 8th, with the N.L. actually winning 3-2. He quickly got the first 2 batters and then gave up a single followed by a stolen base to put the runner in scoring position. He capped that off with a ground rule double to Evan Longoria to knot the score at 3 all. Seven innings later, the A.L. squeezed out a run to win their 11th All-Star Game in a row (not counting the 2002 tie).
