Mets Through the Years: The All-Star(s), 1973
July 9th, 2012 by slangon

The Mets representatives at the 1973 Mid-Summer Classic were all Hall of Famers.

1973 marked the end of an unprecedented era. It marked Willie Mays final appearance as a National League All-Star. Again, not to disparage his accomplishments, but I think he must’ve gotten in on the basis of his good looks or something, because I haven’t seen too many All-Stars that hit .211 on the season. He pinch hit for Willie Stargell in the 7th with the N.L. up 7-1. He struck out.

The Franchise once again was name to the National League All-Star team during a season in which he would go on to win his second Cy Young Award. This year, he did see some action, pitching the 8th inning. Oddly enough, he replaced Willie Mays in the lineup. He got 3 ground outs wrapped around a 1 out walk to Cookie Rojas.
