Card of the Moment #84
June 26th, 2012 by slangon

Today’s Card of the Moment is brought to us by the number 22. And the number 45.

And I’m not talking about the Astro’s record, either.

I’ve mentioned several times in the past about how the Houston Colt .45’s is one of my favorite team names ever. Well, I found out a fact today that makes me kind of like the Houston franchise even more.

The Colt .45’s Class D minor league affiliate for the first 2 years of their existence was the Moultrie Colt .22’s. How awesome is that?

The team played in the Georgia-Florida League in 1962 and 1963 under manager Jim Walton, who also played for the team in 1962. They went 44-74 their first year but improved to 61-55 in their second and final year.

I was able to find this image from a Houston Astros fan’s Tumblr page.

As far as I’ve been able to tell, Jerry Grote never played for them, which probably expalins why he’s the only one of the 3 wearing an actual .45’s cap.
