I Think I’m Going To Have a Contest
October 6th, 2009 by slangon

So now that we’re officially in post-season mode, I’ve decided to have a little contest.

It’s basically a post-season fantasy baseball league. You comment to this post and pick 3 players and 1 pitching staff from the 8 teams in the playoffs. You’ll get points depending on what those 3 hitters and that 1 pitching staff does. After the first round is over, I’ll make a new post announcing the updated results, and you’ll comment to that with another 3 players and pitching staff depending on which teams got knocked out. It’ll continue on like that until the last out of the world series. Whoever has the most points at the end is the winner.

(Additional note: I just want to point out that if somebody picked a particular player, you can still pick them.)

All picks need to be in by 2PM EST on Wednesday. I realize that the Tigers/Twins game is going to make this a little tough, so if you want to pick anyone from either of those two teams, you should name a Tiger or a Twin, and in parenthesis, name a back up player. For example, your pick should look like this: “Joe Mauer (Manny Ramirez)” or “Miguel Cabrera (Denard Span)” or “Minnesota Twins (Boston Red Sox)”. That might sound a bit confusing, but I think it’ll work.

And what’s the prize, you ask? I will spend the next few weeks feverishly finishing up the SlangKo Heroes of the Diamond cards for all 8 playoff contenders and the winner will get a set.

Here’s the points breakdown for hitters:
Single = 1
Double = 2
Triple = 3
Home Run = 4
RBI = 1
Run Scored = 1
Walk = 1
Stolen Base = 2
Caught Stealing = -1
Strike Out = -1
Hit Into Double Play = -1
Hits For The Cycle = 20

And for the Pitching Staff:
Strikeout = 1
Walk = -1
Hit Batter = -1
Balk = -2
Win = 5
Save = 4
Starter Throws Complete Game = 10
Shutout = 10
No Hitter = 20
Perfect Game = 40
Give Up 2 Runs or Less = 7
Give Up 3 Runs = 5
Give Up 4 Runs = 3
Give Up 5 Runs = 1
Give Up 6 Runs = 0
Anything Over 6 Runs = -1 per run

I will tally the points based on the next day’s box score on MLB.com. In addition, once we advance to the Championship Series and the World Series, should any of your players win the MVP of said series, you get a 10 point bonus. That includes the pitching staffs. If you happen to have the Red Sox pitching staff, and Beckett wins the MVP, you get 10 points.

In the event that at the end of the World Series, there’s a tie for first, the tie breaker will be whoever has the most singles from their picks. If that’s still a tie, it’ll go to whoever has the most doubles. From there it’ll go to triples, then homers, and so on down the list of stats. Hopefully, it’ll be resolved by the time we get to the earned runs points, because I don’t know how that would work.

I think I’ve covered all eventualities. I guess if we run into some strange scenario that I don’t have a rule for, I’ll just make a ruling on the spot and you’ll all just have to live with it. Kenesaw Mountain Landis ain’t got shit on me.

Also, for all you bloggers out there, linking to this on your blog won’t get you anything extra, but it sure would make this more fun.
