Even I Kind of Forgot I Was Collecting This Set

It’s been a really long time since I got any cards from the 1969 Topps Deckle Edge set. I’m not sure why. I’m so close to killing it off you would think that I would put a little focus into it and just polish it off, but noooooo. I think before these 2, the last time I scored any was over a year ago when I got the Pete Rose card from this set.

What I find vaguely humorous about this card is the manner in which Rodney is holding the ball. All the time during Mets broadcasts, especially right after a David Wright throw sails over the head of Ike Davis, both Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez go into rants about infielders need to make sure that they’re getting a certain grip on the ball because, unlike pitchers, you don’t want any movement on the ball. You want it to travel a straight line from your hand to the fielders glove, hopefully quicker than the runner is going. It would seem that the 4 seam fastball would be the best pitch for this as when thrown properly, it should travel pretty straight. It’s a little hard to tell, but it looks to me like Rod is using a 2 seam grip, which should sink a little bit. Add to that the fact that he’s tossing side arm and that ball is almost guaranteed to sail on him. What happened to fundamentals, Rod?

Often times when I’m writing about a particular card, I’ll do a bunch of research on the player and the specific card set that it comes from in order to at least pretend like I know what I’m talking about. Then I usually spend a while just looking at the card and soaking it in, so to speak. With this one, every time I start to soak it in, my eye goes straight to that phantom hand creeping out of Willie’s leg and gets stuck there.

There you have it, folks. Two cards closer to closing this sucker out.

  1. Give Rod a break — he’s ready to tag a guy in a rundown.

I have a dupe of this card (or is it a ’68? I forget), but the top deckle edge white has chipped a bit.
