This card is by no means my favorite card. I like it, but do not love it. Why did I choose it for The Card of  the Moment, then? Because at the particular time when I was paging through my binders looking for a card to write about, I looked down and saw this and kept going. But no matter how many great cards I passed, I could not get Luis out of my mind.

First of all, I think that those late 70’s – early 80’s Pirate uniforms have got to be the most gloriously ugly uniforms ever devised by man. Which is not to say that I don’t like them. I happen to like them specifically because they are so ugly. They’re not just ugly, they’re Over The Top ugly. Those painter caps are just plain ridiculous. And that yellow is… well, it’s something. Let’s just leave it at that.

Secondly, have you met his mustache? Good God, man, just look at that thing. It’s pure awesome-osity. Amazing in facial hair form. If you gave that mustache a badge and a gun, there would be no wrong in this world. And just look at Luis’ face. He knows how awesome his ‘stache is. You don’t need to tell him. But he knows you will. Because he knows how awesome it is.

The back I like. There’s something pleasing to me about the dark green, lighter green and blue. Overall, nice and simple. As far as numbers go, Luis’ had a couple of real nice years. 4 twenty win seasons. An 18 win season. Only two losing seasons out of 18. And both of those seem to have been injury seasons, since he only tossed 72 and 57 innings, respectively. Actually, the season before he was only able to throw 93 inning, but still went a respectable 7 -3 with a 3.39 ERA. Not bad. Not bad at all.

What can I say, you won me over Luis Tiant. You won me over.

  1. Luis is cool, no doubt. Those hats on the other hand… hated them then, hate them now.

  2. “If you gave that mustache a badge and a gun, there would be no wrong in this world.”

    awesome.
