June 2011 Was the Greatest Month of Collecting Ever
July 15th, 2011 by slangon

Like most things in life, it seems like collecting little pieces of cardboard with pictures of professional athletes on them has its ebbs and flows. Sometimes, you can go a while without even thinking of cards. Maybe it’s because you get busy, life interrupts, you need to save money, you might even just be (gasp) a little bored of the hobby for a bit. I can personally say that I’ve gone through all of those things. Other times, it seems like your collecting goes through a real boom. Maybe you came into some unexpected money. Maybe you just found a new card shop. Maybe there was a bunch of shows recently. Maybe you happened to see a bunch of good eBay auctions. Whatever the reason, you end up acquiring a bunch of cool stuff in a relatively short period of time.

I’ve been back into collecting for about 2 or 3 years now and I have definitely had my boom times and my slack periods. Thanks to some unexpected loot that I received for both Fathers Day and my birthday, June of 2011 was probably the most boomiest of boom times that I’ve experienced as a collector.

That seemingly random stack of envelopes represents what I consider to be one of the best 30 day hauls I’ve made. It may not look like a huge amount, but I feel like what might possibly lack in quantity is more than made up for in quality. Now, I’m not saying that I went out and scored any ’52 Mantles or T206 Cobbs or anything even approaching that sort of quality, but within the confines of these bubble mailers and heavily reinforced plain white envelopes are a bunch of cards that I’ve been trying to gather for quite a while now and failed at. If I had a “Most Wanted” list, many of the cards herein would’ve been on it. Now they’re in my grubby little hands.

Now, I know what you’re going to say. “But Sean, you just subjected us to a long drawn out series of posts last week where you showed off every piece of crinkled, bent cardboard that some guy sent you for doing something or another for him.” I hear you. I won’t put you through that again. Instead, here’s what I’m going to do. There’s probably close to 50 or 60 cards in there, 80% of which I needed for one set or another. I’m going to pick my Top 5 and post them over the next few days… starting tomorrow.

And just so you don’t feel cranky for having read this without seeing any cards, here’s a random card that I assure you is not in any of those envelopes.

  1. Show them all!!! That white envelope looks like a tenderloin wrapped in butcher paper!

  2. But sean I actually liked seeing all the cards you got. It was nice looking at all the beat up old pieces of cardboard with pictures of athletes on them
