Card of the Moment #75
July 30th, 2011 by slangon

Todays Card of the Moment is brought to us by rectangles. And water stains. And half assed efforts because this was the last post I pre-scheduled before I left on vacation.

1961 Topps #16 Billy Muffett

Looking at this card, the first thing that hits me is that Topps has got to be a New York based company. Why else would they make a Red Sox player pose for his baseball card picture at Yankee Stadium?

“Muff” played parts of 6 seasons in the Majors, pitching for St. Louis, San Francisco and Boston. He called it quits with a 16-23 record and a 4.33 ERA. His rookie year came in 1957 and in hind sight, he probably should have called it quits after that. That year, he went 3-2 with 8 saves and a fine 2.25 ERA. By the way, according to that last cartoon in the panel, “His curveball mystified most of the A.L. batters this season.” If by “mystified” you mean “pissed off because he was throwing at their heads” then that cartoon is spot on. Well done.
