Adios Carlos. And Good Luck.

Carlos Delgado is retiring. Apparently the official announcement will come tomorrow. I know his time with the Mets didn’t end the way we hoped, but I always liked Carlos when he was on the team. I was really hoping for him to come back healthy after his hip injury in 2009. I thought if he had one more full, healthy season under his belt he could’ve gotten to that 500 home run plateau. It turned out he retired with 473.

I’ll also always have a special place in my heart for Delgado because once I got back into collecting in 2007 or 2008, he was the very first relic card that I pulled. I think it was out of a pack of 2007 Upper Deck maybe. Considering I had been away from cards for so long and had never seen a relic card in person, you can image how excited I was to pull a jersey card out of a pack, never mind that it was the big slugger from my favorite team. It was even a pinstriped jersey, not even a boring white swatch.

Anyway, good luck to you in your retirement, Carlos. You will be missed. We’ll always have 2006.
