Countdown to Opening Day: 7
March 25th, 2011 by slangon

7 more days until the season is officially underway.

Starting in left field for the ’86 squad, position #7 on your scorecard, was George Foster.

Although Foster was the Opening Day left fielder in 1986, he started less than half the games for the Mets who released him in August. Being that ’86 was the final year of his career, he didn’t have particularly good numbers during his time in Queens, hitting .227 with 13 home runs and 38 runs batted in. He also wan’t particularly popular with the fans, who apparently expected him to knock one over the fence every time up.

This year, left field will be played by Jason Bay.

Bay didn’t start out very well after signing a $66M deal with the mets before the 2010 season. After getting off to a not-so-great start, he smashed his face into the outfield fence at Dodgers Stadium at the end of July and suffered a season ending concussion. Personally, I can’t see Bay not bouncing back to form and expect him to post numbers closer to his career averages. It seems any effects of the concussion are gone. I don’t think it would be too much to expect around a .280 average, 25 or so homers and 90 RBI.

Advantage 2011.
