First Ernie Harwell, Now Robin Roberts.

2010 SlangKo Award Winners Robin Roberts

Unlike the Ernie Harwell card which I whipped up upon hearing of his death, I had done this Robin Roberts card a while back. I had actually sent it out to get signed by him, but he sent it back with a letter explaining that he only signs for a donation to his foundation, which is understandable. Unfortunately, I never got around to resending my card with the appropriate donation.

Roberts, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976 died earlier today at his home in Florida of natural causes.

He won 286 games and with a string of six consecutive 20-win seasons from 1950 through 1955. Roberts had 45 career shutouts, 2,357 strikeouts and a lifetime ERA of 3.41. He pitched 305 complete games, but also holds the distinction of giving up more home runs than any other major league pitcher. He played for 19 seasons, spending 14 of those with the Phillies.

Rest in peace, Mr. Roberts. And say hi to Ernie.
