The Quest for the 1960 Topps Set, Part VI
April 30th, 2010 by slangon

Here’s another eBay acquisition that I got a day or two before I flew the coop for Florida.

Obviously, it’s not a pristine copy by any means, but hey, it’s a Willie McCovey rookie card, right? Between getting this card and the Yaz rookie crossed off my list I feel a lot better about my chances of completing this set sometime in my lifetime.

There’s a ton of things that I love about this card. First off, it’s Willie McCovey. Secondly, the All-Star Rookie design from the 1960 set is by far my favorite of all the different designs from that set. Thirdly, ever since I’ve gotten this card I’ve been fascinated by whatever that structure is right next to Willie’s head. I’m not sure why. I reckon it’s the base of a light tower or something, but every time I pick this card up, that’s the first place my eye roams to. I keep thinking it’s a ferris wheel.

By the way, I’ve never noticed before this that the All-Star Rookie trophy was a little baseball man standing on a top hat. Classy.
