Million Card Giveaway is Live… Sorta
February 15th, 2010 by slangon

So apparently the site was working, but now it’s not. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that’s because 3 billion cardboard starved fools are trying to get on the site at one time. I was actually able to put in 2 codes, but the site shut down while it was processing my third code, so I’m not sure what that means for me. Hopefully that code will still be good when I try to use it when the site is working again. If it’s not, I’m going to be pissed.

I won’t giveaway too much here, but I was actually pleasantly surprised with the first 2 cards I got.

UPDATE (2:37 PM): So the site was up again and I got that third code to work. I also got my last code card in. Out of my four codes, only 2 were from the 80’s junk wax era. The other 2 were pre-1975. Nobody outstanding, but pretty cool nonetheless. The best card I got was a ’66, but as luck would have it, I actually already own that particular card. If the damn site wasn’t getting besieged so badly I would look into the whole trading thing. Maybe I could swap it out for a ’66 Met that I need.

UPDATE (2:52 PM): One thing I’ve been really curious about with this whole thing is how are they deciding what card you get. Like everyone else, I’ve had my code cards for a week or two now and obviously haven’t been able to use them until today. What I want to know is did Topps already know that whatever particular code I had would get me the card that it did, or did the code get assigned to a card once I inputted it? I don’t know if anyone’s already gotten the ’52 Mantle, but do they already know what code will get that, or is it just assigned randomly? Earlier I saw a link on the site that was an About the Giveaway link, but I wasn’t able to get it to come up.

UPDATE (3:30 PM): I’m starting to think that maybe the distribution of cards isn’t as bad as everyone (including myself) was expecting. If you haven’t been able to get on the site yet, on the home page they have a box with a list of the 10 most recent cards that were redeemed. Of course it has it’s fair share of 80’s and 90’s junk, but the last every time I have been able to get on the site, there’s been at least 3 cards from the 70’s or earlier. I’ve seen quite a few 50’s and 60’s cards.

  1. I’ve been waiting for the site to go back up for a while now too. Have 6 codes sitting here just waiting to be input!

  2. I got 2 1952 cards a couple of 60’s -70’s cards and some junk. out of 12 redemptions, not bad

  3. I inputted 5, got 4 1980s-90s junk, a 2005 junk and a 1962 Robin Roberts.

A Hall of Famer (two, actually, one cards was a 1987 Whitey Herzog) with some junk is fine with me.

    Year breakdown, 1962, 2x 1987, 1988, 1993 and 2005.
