Sunday Afternoon Football Cards, Must-Win Edition
November 8th, 2009 by slangon

I know it’s only halfway through the season, and I know the Giants are 5-3, but I feel like they really need this one. They’re heading into a bye week, which is good. They’ll get some rest, regroup a bit. But do you want to head into your bye week as a team with a 4 game losing streak, or a team that just broke a losing streak?

Anyway, onto the cards. I got another blaster, and was going to split it into 2 weeks, but I was a bit antsy about todays game, so before I knew it, I ripped all 8 packs. Oh well. Let’s do this.

09MAGICriceFirst we have Ray Rice. I don’t really know anything about him, but I picked his card because it’s Rutgers and I happen to live about 20 minutes away from Rutgers. Even though I don’t root for college football, I guess if you put a gun to my head, I would root for Rutgers. I’m a Jersey guy.

09MAGICbush_mccoy_avery_MA trio of mini’s. I cannot help it. I love mini’s. I love them so much I will post any mini up here. Even if I don’t give  a crap about the player. I’m weird.

09MAGICgatesNow this is a weird one. Obviously Antonio Gates is a professional football player, and a very good one at that. But here we have a football card of him depicted as a basketball player. Hmmm. What’s up with that Topps? The back says “Gates never played football at any of the four colleges he attended, but instead settled in as a basketball star at Kent State.” So what you’re saying is even though this particular feller did not play college football, you are still going to include him in a set of cards specifically dedicated to college football? Good choice.

09MAGICrobinson_burlesonMA couple of more mini’s. I just want to tickle their toes.

09MAGIChagen_smithA couple of Giants. I already had Hagan’s base card, but it’s always cool to get the mini as well. This is also a good chance to show the difference in size from the base card and the mini. Also, I think after that Steve Smith card, I only need 2 more Giants from this set.

09MAGICinserts2The lame-ass inserts. I still hate these, but I do kind of like the Dewey Defeats Truman card.

09MAGICbrees_bookerMBSome black border Mini’s. These just look too cool for school. Brees is having one hell of a fine season, too.

09MAGICjackson_dorsettA couple of old timers. I always love when sets include retired players. That Jackson card is incredible. Can you imagine playing football and seeing that running at you?

09MAGICinsertsAnd finally, the sweet-ass inserts. The All-Americans are hands-down my favorite inserts in this set. It’s just that much more awesome to get a legendary player like Elway.

Well, that does it for this weeks football cards. That blaster was a bit dry, but I put a pretty good dent in the old checklist. Now, let’s go Giants!

  1. Ray Rice rules actually. Pretty talented dude.

Also, the Avery and Gates are AWESOME. Avery because he has some weird pose goin’ on…Gates because my girlfriend took classes at Kent State during her senior year of high school. Nice to see a Golden Flashes card haha. Nice pulls.

  2. Sorry my Chargers destroyed your season… Blame Coughlin.

  3. That’s low.

  4. @Tim – It’s funny you should mention the pose on the Avery card. After you said that, I started to notice that pretty much all football cards to me look like weird dance moves. Considering the number of football players who have participated in Dancing with the Stars, I say someone should put out a set of cards where football players teach you how to dance. They could be doing the Cha-Cha in their full uniform, and the back could have the step chart, done like a chalkboard football play.
